My approach to hypnosis

As was mentioned in the research, hypnosis for stopping smoking has not been standardized to any one single method.

Nevertheless, hypnosis scores well across the board. And this fact gives you a choice in methods.

As I see it, methods of hypnosis fall into two broad categories:

  • Toward motivation focusing on what you like and want
  • Away from motivation focusing on what you don't like and don't want

Away from motivation usually can prompt movement when there is none, but that doesn't finish the job.

Some hypnotists focus exclusively on away from motivation for smoking. Their methods rely on aversion techniques, in my view. When framed that way, quitting smoking amounts to losing something that you like. And I don't think too many people will finish a program that is inherently unpleasant.

That's why I emphasize toward motivation. I include methods to engage your imagination so you create a favorable, inviting, positive, compelling image of your future that draws you into it. One that is smoke free.

I believe that people are much more likely to complete a program that is engaging and enjoyable.

What if I can't come out of hypnosis?

Actually the worst case that I have ever seen in a hypnosis session is someone nodding off to sleep, then waking rested and refreshed.

That is the risk when someone remains still with eyes closed for 20 to 30 minutes.

Of course, good results come faster if someone stays awake.

That is why I do not recommend listening to a hypnosis CD in bed.

Can only the weak-minded be hypnotized?

No. Since hypnosis requires focused attention, the best clients tend to be the most intelligent.

Will I surrender my will with hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis is a method to regain control over an area of your life that is currently beyond the control of your conscious mind.

Many people think that their ability to control begins and ends with their conscious mind. In reality we have much, much more power than that. Hypnosis is a way to tap into those great resources that are available and waiting to be used--and then direct them how you want.

A famous phrase of hypnosis is that "You can not be hypnotized to do anything you do not want to do." The message here is that you are fully in charge of the process.

The hypnotist is like a guide or a trainer.

Is hypnosis sleep?

No. Although sleep and hypnosis both involve relaxation, there is a big difference. With hypnosis you focus your attention, whereas with sleep you allow your attention to wander and simply drift off.

What is hypnosis like? I've never been hypnotized

We go into and come out of light trance states all the time, about every minute.

Watching TV, reading, walking down the street or driving on a highway are all examples of focused attention in a light trance state that we do to ourselves.

When you think to remember the answer to a question, like for an address or phone number that you have not recalled in a while, you are putting yourself in a light trance state.

Hypnosis is like that, a very familiar feeling because we actually do it so often.
