14 Self-Care

Description

This category involved smokers quitting on their own with the aid of:

  • Self-help books
  • Kits
  • Mailing campaigns
  • Manuals
Examples include the American Cancer Society Quit Kit, American Lung Association publications, and many others.

3,585 smokers included from 24 separate studies.

Results

Self-care had the 14th highest quit rate of any category.

These results are really weak.

Interestingly, even though there were many of different books in different studies, the results for books were all the same.

Bottom line

Differences in books had no impact on quit rates. No matter which book was used, or what the book said, the results were consistent.

Some people do actually quit with Self-care, but it is on the order of a few per hundred who try.

The upside is that Self-care is relatively cheap.

So you need to ask yourself if you are in the lucky few. Is it worth the time and effort to use one of the weaker methods?
